I had heard sooo much about this place, that I was dying to see what all the fuss was about! When I arrived about 12.30pm for lunch on Sunday, I was starving hungry. The decor immediately impressed me, although the line up just to get into the place didn't. It reminded me of my uni days queuing down alley ways to get into music gigs - because that really was what it was like! However, the line moved pretty quickly, and I was so desperate to try the place, that my willpower was strong. We were seated indoors and the decor was really modern with a contemporary arty feel about it. There were various seating options, indoors and outdoors.
Given all the hype about the place, I was disappointed that no items on the menu were marked gluten free and there were no other dietary requirements mentioned on the menu. Only a couple of cakes in the cabinet were marked gluten free...but even then they had to check. Therefore, again my options were somewhat limited. I had the Osso Bucco - you maybe wondering what that is, I certainly was! Turns out it is a slab of beef on the bone (like a shank) that comes on mashed potato with some winter veges and some jus. To be honest, it was average. Ideal for the wintery day, but way too much mashed potato and not enough meat. Plus the meat was fatty. Not a fan. The redeeming feature was the excellent coffee afterwards. Note the kitchen shuts at 2.30pm, so don't go for a late lunch!
The service was excellent and the staff were very knowledgeable about dietary requirements and were able to go through the menu in detail with me.Really would have been useful if this could have just been printed on the menu! But the staff do not accept bookings, which has to downgrade the otherwise impeccable ranking for this category.
Excellent value for money - the lunches are the same price as the breakfast, which is always nice and it only cost $50 for 2 of us, with 2 rounds of coffee as well!
